Yas Marina – F1 Race Track – Lighting and Power Generator Controls by KNX



The task scenario was the lighting control of the Yas Marina F1 Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Applications include centralised control of the track lighting as well as the monitoring of the 44 generator parameters. Due to the large area of the track and the number of data points the track had to be divided.


Together with the contractor, MUSCO lighting Dubai agreed on 4 KNX lines which were connected with each other with four line couplers coming of the main area. Then for each line (approximate length of each line 1,5 kilometres) four power supplies and four line boosters were used to achieve distribution of the signals on KNX system. The whole system was controlled and monitored from a server in the race control room.

Implementations and functions


  • Control of track lighting that included the feeder pillars, the grandstands floodlights and the Mirtran Lights that are needed for the HiDef broadcasting of the race.
  • The control of the generators as well as the main breakers in the power panels.
  • The monitoring of parameters of the 44 generators. The parameters that were monitored are the Apparent power, L1-N generator voltage, L2-N generator voltage, L3-N generator voltage, Current, Generator frequency, Fuel level, Fuel low level alarm, Operating hours, Battery voltage, Engine oil pressure and Engine coolant temperature.
  • Central control and monitoring are enabled via coupling to the race control on the KNX visualisation Server.
